Birgit Thalau
Birgit Thalau tries to identify what remains of our gestures. In her work she also explores the diversion of materials and objects from everyday life and tries to highlight the qualities associated with jewellery through a particular treatment. Birgit Thalau graduated in 1995 from secondary school in the art department (Luxembourg), she then learned silversmithing in Germany where she worked until 2001. She continued her education in the Netherlands and Estonia, took advanced training courses in Italy and Finland to develop her personal approach and specialize in contemporary art jewellery. Since 2000, she has presented her work both at the national and international level and has received several scholarships, financial support and awards. Birgit Thalau has been residing in Luxembourg since 2009, where she continues her artistic practice and teaches as an educational assistant in the "Atelier" branch.
For this exhibition, the artist revisits the family history of her parents, who lived and worked in different European countries. This history is embodied in the personal objects that accompanied them, which she reworks with artisanal gestures and the intention of paying homage to her parents in her work.
