FR | Joaquim Boavida est né en 1964 à Redondo, district d’Évora, et il a appris l’art du rembourrage dès son enfance dans un atelier où il se rendait pendant les vacances scolaires. À l’âge de 19 ans, il démarre son entreprise en partenariat avec son épouse, Cristina Boavida, qui peint ses œuvres. Il achète le bois et cueille le jonc à Ribeira de Fronteira. Il a commencé par fabriquer des jouets de son enfance et des chaises miniatures et seulement plus tard les célèbres chaises Alentejo. Il récupère le scirpe au bord de la rivière et c’est dans son atelier de Baleizão, municipalité de Beja, qu’il restaure et fabrique des chaises, combinant la technique de l’entrelacement des fibres végétales avec les compétences de la menuiserie. EN | Born in Redondo in 1964 in the district of Évora, Joaquim Boavida learned the art of wood and bulrush chairmaking as a child in a workshop where he spent his school holidays. At the age of 19 he started his business in partnership with his wife, Cristina Boavida, who paints his pieces. He buys the wood and sources the bulrush for his work in Ribeira de Fronteira. EN | Manuel Pica (b. 1960) taught himself the art of creating wood and bulrush chairs. After initially making toys from his childhood and miniature chairs, it was only later that he began to make the famous Alentejo chairs. He collects bulrush by the river and restores and builds chairs in his workshop in Baleizão, Beja, combining the technique of interlacing plant fibres with carpentry skills. Son atelier se trouve chez lui où il expose ses œuvres, dont certaines sont de grande taille. Il a été honoré en 2016 de la Médaille Municipale du Mérite, Diplôme d’Argent, décernée par la Municipalité de Guarda et sélectionné par ADM Estrela pour faire partie du projet ONEP — On Inclusive ‘Entrepreneur / Entrepreneuriat Inclusif. Depuis 2003, il collecte et prépare sur sa plantation, de l’osier vert, de l’osier jaune, de l’osier espagnol et du saule blanc. Afin de soutenir cet art, la Mairie de Santarém a fait don d’un espace, des outils utilisés pendant le cours et de la matière première restant du stage, lui permettant de démarrer son entreprise. Il collectionne actuellement le jonc près de chez lui et dispense des formations pour que cet art ne disparaisse pas. Il a reçu un diplôme décerné par la Mairie de Santarém, qui l’a désigné comme Ambassadeur Scalabitano du Jonc et a récemment été l’un des vanniers récompensés lors de l’édition 2022 de la Foire Internationale de la Basket Salt (Espagne) EN | Manuel Ferreira (b. 1955) began producing bulrush furniture in 1989 after attending a heritage conservation training event. To support the development of this art, the Santarém Municipal Council donated space, tools and raw materials left over from the internship, allowing him to start his business. He currently collects the bulrush near his home and ensures the longevity of this art form through training events. He received a diploma from the Santarém City Council designating him as the Scalabitano Bulrush Ambassador and was among the wickerworkers to receive a prize at the 2022 edition of the Salt International Wickerwork Fair (Spain).
