EN | Karolina Pernar was born in 1978 in Zagreb (CR). She studied in Italy, in Perugia, where she obtained her BFA with honours at the Academy of Fine Arts “Pietro Vannucci”, in the Sculpture department. She lives and works in Luxembourg since 2015. Her work challenges preconceived ideas and expectations of the public; questioning aspects of perception, memory, time and space. The main characteristics of her work are the use of the gallery space as a framework to define the artwork and the affirmation of the imaginary as a place of authentic art. The simplicity of form is an aesthetic choice that allows her to create a semblance of emptiness, a space that offers the viewer the opportunity to individually discover its dimensions and meaning. The tension between multiplicity and emptiness is an important aspect of his installations. A void is an active space of perception and invites the viewer to participate in the construction of an imaginary volume in an open space. By combining sculpture, installation, video and collage, she questions in which directions the concept of sculpture can be extended, which spaces a sculpture can occupy and consequently what sculpture can be. Sa pratique consiste en des œuvres qui remettent en question les idées préconçues et les attentes du public ; questionner les aspects de la perception, de la mémoire, du temps et de l’espace. Les principales caractéristiques de son oeuvre sont l’utilisation de l’espace de la galerie comme cadre pour définir le travail artistique et l’affirmation de l’imaginaire comme lieu d’art authentique. La simplicité de la forme est un choix esthétique qui lui permet de créer un semblant de vide, un espace qui offre au spectateur la possibilité de découvrir individuellement ses dimensions et sa signification. La tension entre multiplicité et vide constitue un aspect important de ses installations. Un vide est un espace actif de perception et il invite le spectateur à participer à la construction d’un volume imaginaire dans un espace ouvert. En combinant sculpture, installations, vidéo et collages, elle interroge dans quelles directions le concept de sculpture peut s’étendre, quels espaces la sculpture peut occuper et par conséquent, ce que peut être la sculpture. L’artiste porte un intérêt particulier au cycle de l’écosystème dans son œuvre, considérant l’homme comme un microcosme dans un macrocosme. Ainsi, elle collecte les déchets plastiques qui s’accumulent dans son environnement pour créer des œuvres composées de bouteilles en PET colorées industriellement, qui se transforment en une surface soudée ou tissée - ou en sculptures spatiales. Sa collecte des bouteilles dans la région du Luxembourg permet alors de retirer une infime partie du circuit de consommation et de les recycler en un tapis tissé de la plus ancienne technique artisanale, qui représente l’interconnexion de l’humanité et la problématique du traitement des « déchets ». The artist has a particular interest in the cycle of the ecosystem in her work, considering man as a microcosm in a macrocosm. Thus, she collects the plastic waste that accumulates in her environment to create works composed of industrially colored PET bottles, which turn into a welded or woven surface - or spatial sculptures. Collecting bottles in the region of Luxembourg allows to remove a tiny part of the consumption circuit and to recycle them into a woven carpet using the oldest artisanal technique. This represents the interconnection of humanity and the problem of waste treatment.
