Catharina Luteijn
Karin Catharina Luteijn, originally from the Netherlands, moved to Luxembourg in the 1960s. After specialising in ceramics at the Lycée des Arts et Métiers, she perfected her skills in Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands. In 2002, she opened her own workshop, KeramiK 'Art, and teaches ceramics at the same time. Her passion for porcelain, explored in 2010, has transformed the way she expresses her deep love of nature through art.
Karin Catharina's artistic approach aims to highlight the natural beauty of everyday life around her, particularly in rural Luxembourg, marked by its vegetable gardens and weekly markets. Her project consists of creating a series of natural stoneware baskets containing roses in natural porcelain, symbolising the contrast between the rusticity of stoneware and the delicacy of porcelain, reflecting Luxembourg society.
To make her stoneware baskets, Karin Catharina prepares her own 'Paper-Clay' mixture by mixing stoneware with cellulose, similar to the preparation of paper porcelain. This material is then modelled, rolled and printed to create the structure of the basket. The petals of the porcelain roses are individually shaped and assembled around a paper ball. The porcelain fruit and vegetables are coloured in the mass with pigments. After drying, all the pieces are fired at high temperature in an electric kiln.
