Isabelle Azaïs
Isabelle Azaïs is a Belgian jewellery designer, wellknown for her experiments using leather and recycled plastic. Contrary to what is classically done in jewellery, Isabelle skips the drawing phase and directly shapes the material. The underlying approach is twofold. She wants to carry out the creative process from start to finish and to master all the stages. She also succeeds to do the best with few raw material. The piece "L'enfer", exhibited here, applies this process to sculpture. She develops her technique on a larger scale. Among her research with plastic materials, she has also developed collections of jewellery and objects made of plastic straps that she recovers from building sites, as well as collections made from survival blankets that she gleans at the end of sports marathons. Recently, for a commission from the Musée des Égouts de la ville de Bruxelles, she also worked with advertising tarpaulins to create large-scale decorative panels.
